Psychology of Massage

It's more than just back rub...

Massage offers great therapeutic benefits for psychopathologies. Dopamine & serotonin are two very common neurotransmitters studied and most commonly connected to anxiety and depression. Dopamine affects our ability to sense pleasure and cognitive function, think of that dopey in love feeling... that's dopamine. Serotonin affects the way we think and process information, think of the inner self-talk you have going on... that can be an indicator of serotonin levels.

We know states of stress increase cortisol levels but did you know these cortisol levels communicate to the body? It creates a negative feedback loop in the system. For those with maladaptive responses, this breakdown in the cycle is responsible for mood dysregulation, anxiety, and PTSD, as it affects the dopamine and serotonin levels.

How does massage help with this?

Because massage assists with calming the central nervous system, it breaks the cycle of cortisol release. It also boosts serotonin and dopamine levels. This is why you may experience a mild euphoric state after a massage. We often refer to this as being massage drunk. Massage therapy allows your nervous system a break from the dysfunctioning pattern. For some, this break is just enough to allow them to regain their ability to self-regulate with more ease.

A massage therapist skilled in both massage and energy healing may provide an even more deeply relaxing experience, as well as assist in the emotional states of being. This type of session offers a more holistic, fully rounded experience to address not only the physical but the mental, emotional, and spiritual aspects of the whole person. This is why I offer my Signature Sacred Soul Massage.
